Agtech Sweden presented the Smart Renewable Energy Systems project at Brunnby Agricultural Days 2026 together with its project partners.

“These have been intensive days, with many interesting meetings and discussions about energy solutions and new technologies in agriculture. It is encouraging to see such enthusiasm among farmers and other stakeholders,” says Per Frankelius, Chief Initiative Officer Innovation at Agtech Sweden, Linköping University, which leads the project.

The project aims to increase knowledge about how renewable energy can contribute to more resilient and competitive agriculture. At Brunnby Agricultural Days, the project was presented together with its partners Vreta Kluster, Agro Örebro, Agro Sörmland and Agro Västmanland.

Seminars

Project manager Kristian Petersson (Vreta Kluster/LRF) held a seminar with Ola Albrektsson from Agro Örebro on different ways of supplying energy to farms.

Per Frankelius and Magnus Samuelsson from Agtech Sweden explored the topic further in their seminar entitled Produce your own tractor fuel, which looked at fuels from the past to the present day.

“There are still no clear answers to the questions of what fuel we will put in our tanks in the future or how we will produce our electricity. Fossil fuels are still the most common. But the trend is quite clear: many want to produce energy close to the farm, or from materials originating on the farm, using renewable energy sources such as HVO, biogas, hydrogen, solar power and wind power. In the future, energy production will be more diversified than it was during much of the 20th century,” says Per Frankelius.

Ambassador visits the stand

The exhibition stand attracted plenty of visitors during the event. Among them were Swedish Member of Parliament Magnus Oscarsson and Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Sweden, Rakhmatulla Nurimbetov.

“It is very gratifying that they took the time to seek out our stand at the event!”

The stand also showcased some of Agtech Sweden’s testbeds for energy solutions.

Energy solutions

“We need to work with farms to test new energy solutions, and we are looking for more such collaborations. It is important to be able to test new technologies in real-world environments over time to see how they perform,” says project manager Kristian Petersson.

One particularly popular exhibit explored the history of the tractor from the perspective of energy solutions, ranging from kerosene and petrol to producer gas and ammonia. Many visitors were surprised to learn that experiments with fuels and energy sources such as electricity and ethanol were already taking place in the 1890s. The first hydrogen fuel-cell tractor appeared as early as 1959.

“Agriculture has always been a little ahead of the curve,” notes Per Frankelius.
